Solar Adoption in Malaysia Is Accelerating

Malaysia’s total solar capacity reached about 5.8 GW by the end of 2025 (IEA-PVPS). Government programmes, falling panel costs, and rising TNB tariffs are driving adoption across every segment.

Residential Is Booming
Solar ATAP, in operation since 1 January 2026, replaces NEM 3.0. Domestic exports are credited at the applicable Energy Charge, subject to grid capacity and system caps: up to 5 kW single-phase or 15 kW three-phase. Rooftop solar is a fast-growing part of Malaysia’s solar mix.

C&I Demand Is Growing
GITA provides a capital allowance on qualifying green technology assets — 60% for solar PV and 100% for BESS — for CAPEX incurred by 31 Dec 2026 (via MGTC). With TNB commercial tariffs rising and ESG reporting now expected by stakeholders, businesses are adopting solar through CAPEX, PPA, or ESCO models, with typical paybacks of around 4–7 years (an estimate for reference only).

Utility-Scale Pipeline Expanding
LSS PETRA 5+ awarded 1,975 MW across 13 projects at an average tariff of about 15 sen/kWh (RM 0.152/kWh). The National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) targets 70% renewable installed capacity by 2050, with solar the largest contributor. Grid-scale BESS is being procured through the Energy Commission’s MyBeST programme, with four systems due to be commissioned in 2027.

Global Context
Globally, about 511 GW of solar was added in 2025 — roughly three-quarters of all new renewable capacity (IRENA). The global weighted-average LCOE of utility-scale solar PV was USD 0.043/kWh in 2024 (IRENA), making it one of the cheapest sources of new electricity. The IEA expects renewables to overtake coal as the world’s largest source of electricity generation around 2025–26.
