MyBeST is the Malaysia Battery Energy Storage Programme, run by the Energy Commission, covering four grid-connected projects of 100MW/400MWh each, due for commissioning in 2027. As announced in September 2026, ERS Energy secured 2 of the 4 projects, 200MW/800MWh combined, including the Pekan project in Pahang.

Key facts

  • MyBeST is Malaysia’s inaugural competitive bidding programme for grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Programme total: 400MW/1600MWh in four projects of 100MW/400MWh each, per the Energy Commission.
  • The Energy Commission finalised the shortlisted bidders on 19 December 2025, from 28 applications.
  • ERS Energy secured 2 of 4 projects, 200MW/800MWh combined, described by The Star as the largest award recipient.
  • Pekan Standalone BESS, Pahang: 100MW/400MWh, with HyperStrong (hardware) and GAMUDA (civil execution).

What is MyBeST?

The Malaysia Battery Energy Storage Programme (MyBeST) is the country’s first large competitive solicitation for grid-connected battery energy storage systems (BESS). The Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) launched the solicitation in November 2024 and received 28 applications. Four projects were accepted, and the shortlist was finalised on 19 December 2025 (see Baker McKenzie’s programme summary).

The Energy Commission describes the four projects as 100MW/400MWh each, to be commissioned in 2027.

Why does Malaysia need grid-scale batteries?

Standalone BESS helps the grid absorb more solar by storing energy when generation is high and releasing it when demand peaks. That supports the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), whose target, set out by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), is 70 percent renewable energy capacity by 2050. For background on storage at the building level, see Solar + BESS for Malaysian factories.

What did ERS Energy secure under MyBeST?

ERS Energy secured 2 of the 4 MyBeST projects, with a combined 200MW/800MWh of grid-scale battery storage, as announced in September 2026. The Star described the company as the largest award recipient under the inaugural programme. The two projects form part of ERS Energy’s utility-scale BESS portfolio, which has passed 1.5GWh across Southeast Asia.

What is the MyBeST Pekan BESS project?

The MyBeST Pekan Standalone BESS Project is a utility-scale, grid-connected facility in Pekan, Pahang, rated 100MW/400MWh. It was announced on 29 May 2026 as a collaboration among ERS Energy, HyperStrong and GAMUDA.

The facility will help integrate more renewable capacity into the grid in support of the NETR. Pekan is one of the two MyBeST projects secured by ERS Energy. Grid batteries of this kind store surplus energy when supply is high and release it when demand is high, which helps the grid absorb more solar.

What does MyBeST mean for businesses?

MyBeST is a competitive solicitation for developers of grid-scale storage, so a business does not apply to it or receive a subsidy from it. Its projects serve the grid, while a factory’s own battery serves its own load. Businesses weighing their own storage can look at retrofitting a BESS to existing solar and at the broader ERS solutions range.

How ERS Energy helps

ERS Energy has been an engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) contractor since 2009, with 2 GWp+ installed across 2,000+ projects in six markets and ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certification. At Pekan our role is EPCC contractor, working with HyperStrong on hardware and GAMUDA on civil execution. Explore our utility-scale work on the utility-scale projects page.

Frequently asked questions

Who runs MyBeST?

The Energy Commission of Malaysia (Suruhanjaya Tenaga) runs the MyBeST competitive solicitation. It launched the process in November 2024, received 28 applications and finalised the shortlisted bidders on 19 December 2025, selecting four projects.

How big is MyBeST in total?

The Energy Commission describes the programme as four grid-connected projects of 100MW/400MWh each, or 400MW/1600MWh in total. ERS Energy’s two awards have a combined capacity of 800MWh, which is half of the programme’s headline capacity.

Where is the ERS Energy Pekan project?

The MyBeST Pekan Standalone BESS Project is in Pekan, Pahang. It is a 100MW/400MWh grid-connected facility, with ERS Energy as EPCC contractor, HyperStrong on hardware and GAMUDA on civil execution.

When will MyBeST projects operate?

The Energy Commission says the four projects will be commissioned in 2027. Exact dates depend on construction and grid connection for each project, so check the Energy Commission and the project owners for updates.
